Iconic Bridge Wins Prestigious Global Award
One of the region's most iconic structures has scooped another prestigious international award.
Infinity Bridge in Stockton won the structural profession's ultimate prize, the 'Supreme Award' at a glittering ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London.
The bridge, which straddles the River Tees with its stunning double arch design, fought off strong competition from more than 100 global entries in 11 categories, from stadia to public buildings and bridges to private houses.
At the Structural Awards, Infinity Bridge was initially named 'Best Pedestrian Bridge' before going on to win the top prize.
The bridge was the brainchild of Tees Valley Unlimited and Stockton Council with support from the Homes and Communities Agency and One North East. It was brought to life by local firm Balfour Beatty.
Richard Buckley, Director of Development at Tees Valley Unlimited, said: "To win any award is obviously great news but for Infinity Bridge to beat off entries from around the world is a real testament to its stature within the structural profession.
"The bridge has become the focal point of regeneration, not just in Stockton but across the Tees Valley and the wider North East, and I'm delighted it has been singled out at such a prestigious and influential level."
