Architects Selected for Northshore Homezone
The continental architects who will help transform Tees Valley Unlimited's flagship project in Stockton into a prime, much sought-after place to live have been unveiled.
Portuguese practice Impromptu Arquitectos have been selected from over 100 entrants who took part in the international 'Make me a Home' competition launched by joint developers Urban Splash and Muse Developments in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Tees valley Unlimited's Director of Development, Richard Buckley said: "This is a significant step for the project and a firm indication that the scheme is moving in the right direction.
"We believe that the designs and concepts chosen combine practicality and opportunity and that's exactly what we want for Northshore."
The design competition for family homes was launched last year and immediately attracted global interest. Last January a public exhibition of the top 20 entries was held in The Shambles on Stockton High Street.
Urban Splash Development Manager Mark Latham said: "The designs that we have now are not exact models as to how the houses will look but rather the preferred concept for Northshore.
"Impromptu impressed the judges with their notion of a family home that can be easily adapted to meet a family's needs. Whereas one home may include an outdoor dining area another may utilise that space as, for example, a study. Similarly, one home may be two storeys with a roof terrace and neighbour a three storey home with additional bedrooms.
"This adaptability of the style of home gives us huge scope as developers."
Muse Development Surveyor, James Crawley added: "We were impressed with Impromptu's understanding of the Northshore site. Their masterplan has the potential to create stunning gardens and public spaces right on the banks of the River Tees.
"The establishment of a new community on the site is an important part of the Northshore vision and the team identified this early on."
Impromptu Arquitectos will work with their appointed partners Sergison Bates, a UK based and award winning architects firm. It is anticipated that detailed planning designs will be ready for submission to Stockton Borough Council for approval at the end of the year.
Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: "The Homezone at Northshore sits close to the Infinity Bridge. The standard for Northshore has always been high but we're proud that with each development the bar is raised.
"It is undoubtedly an exciting time for Stockton."
